Your wedding, in the heart of Southern Italy.

Hosted by our family across Matera and Puglia for three generations.

The Villa

A family-run wedding venue, just outside Matera. Our garden, the young oak grove and the Patio give every celebration room to breathe. This is where we started, three generations ago, and where most of our weddings still take place.

The Sassi

A wedding inside the ancient stone city of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved into the rock. We bring our kitchen and team into hotels and historic houses in the Sassi, so you can marry where the South of Italy began — with total peace of mind.

The Masseria

Celebrate at a masseria in the countryside around Matera, or anywhere in Basilicata and Puglia. Stone walls, olive groves, long tables under the sky — and the same kitchen and team you would have at the Villa, travelling with us to host your day.

An authentic kitchen of Southern Italy.

We bring the flavours of Southern Italy to your table, just as we eat at home: Basilicata, the Murgia, Puglia. Matera bread, seasonal vegetables sourced from neighbouring farms, and fresh fish from our two seas, the Ionian and the Adriatic. Recipes that have been passed down for generations, plated for a wedding but never overworked. What you taste here is the land, in season.

The kitchen is led by Antonio Dabraio, our resident chef, who runs the brigade day after day. Menu development is guided by Paolo Cappuccio, our Michelin-starred executive chef, who works with Antonio on signature dishes and seasonal menus. The result is a kitchen that is both rooted in this land and held to a serious standard.

Where to stay

The historic heart of Matera — the Sassi area — is a short drive from Villa Schiuma and is full of small boutique hotels and cave hotels. We can suggest accommodation partners that match your group size and budget — just ask.

We host you, and your guests, beyond the day.

A destination wedding is rarely one day. Many couples who come from afar arrive with family and friends a few days early and stay on afterwards. We help you turn those days into something your guests will remember: a welcome dinner, a tour through the Sassi, a transfer from the airport that already feels like the wedding has started. Share your vision with us, and we'll take care of every detail.

Tell me what you need for the week, not just the day.
  • Pre-wedding party

Welcome dinner at the Villa, aperitivo in the Sassi, a family gathering the night before.

  • Guided tours of Matera and the Murgia

Private guides for your guests, in English, tailored to what your group enjoys — history, food, landscape.

  • Transfers

Coaches and minivans from the airports, the hotels and Matera centre, coordinated to your timing.

  • Other arrangements

Photographers, florists, music, hair and makeup — you choose them, and our wedding manager takes note of every supplier, so that on the day our maître can welcome them all.

Una struttura stupenda con uno staff impeccabile. Abbiamo organizzato un matrimonio a 1000 km di distanza e tutto è stato fantastico. Risposte veloci e cordiali. Davvero i numeri uno.

Translated from Italian “A stunning venue with an impeccable team. We organised a wedding from 1,000 km away and everything was fantastic. Quick, friendly replies. Truly the best.”

Frequently asked questions

The questions our international couples ask us most often.

Can foreign couples legally marry in Italy?

Yes — with a civil or a religious ceremony (a symbolic one has no legal value). Italian law recognises weddings between foreign citizens, and so do most home countries when the paperwork is done properly. We guide you through every step.

What documents do we need, and how long does it take?

You will typically need sworn translations of your birth certificates, a "nulla osta" (statement of no impediment) from your embassy in Italy, and a few civil-status documents specific to your country. Navigating foreign paperwork can feel overwhelming, but you won't be on your own: our wedding manager helps you with the practical side, step by step, and we handle the communication with the registry office.

Which languages do you speak at the venue?

English — I (Nicola) handle every international wedding personally, in English. Italian, of course. And French — one of our team members is fluent.

Can we visit before booking?

Yes, and we recommend it. The visit and the consultation are one appointment, at least an hour and a half: we show you the Villa, then we sit down and build your quote together. The tasting is included, once you have booked; when the dates work out, you can also taste something before booking, at one of our tastings or open evenings. If you cannot travel before booking, we start with a video call.

What's included, and what's a la carte?

Included: the venue, the catering, a wedding manager dedicated to your day, and the basic setup of tables, linens and service. Your own choice: florals, photography, music, hair and makeup — as many suppliers as you like, except the kitchen, which is ours. Transfers, tours and any extra arrangements for your guests are on request. We build the quote together during the consultation.

Civil, religious, or symbolic ceremony — can we do it on site?

Civil: yes. Villa Schiuma is officially a Casa Comunale, a wedding venue of the city of Matera, so a civil ceremony here, with an officiant from the city, has full legal value. Otherwise, a civil wedding takes place at the town hall or in one of the historic venues the city has chosen in the Sassi; at a masseria, the ceremony is symbolic. Religious: you choose your church, in Matera or the surrounding area, and we can suggest options that fit your faith and your story. Symbolic: yes, fully personalised — including non-denominational ceremonies. We welcome same-sex couples: civil unions are celebrated at the Villa too, with the same legal value, and symbolic ceremonies can take place at the Villa, in the Sassi, or at a masseria.

Your contact, personally.

I'm Nicola Schiuma, third generation host at Villa Schiuma. I work with every destination couple personally — in English, on WhatsApp, by video call, and in person when you visit. You won't be passed between departments or assistants. It's me, my family, and our team. I read every message myself, and I'll get back to you soon. I look forward to seeing how we can bring your day to life, and you will always hear back from me directly.
